During my latest trip to Jeongseon, I visited the Jeongseon 5 day market, also known as the arirang market! This market is located in the heart of Jeongseon and offers all sorts of products from Korea, Gangwondo, and Jeongseon specifically. Therefore, knew it would be a mandatory stop for my upcoming trip. I visited around lunchtime, as I considered that to be the optimal time to enjoy as many snacks and foods as possible, while not risking stalls selling out or closing early. I entered the market just before noon and was greated by several friendly locals. I first made my way over to a traditional snack stand, where they sold a lot of typical Korean treats. They offered me some free samples, as I was not too familiar with such products. It was fluffy, sweet and sticky on the inside, yet it was covered with crispy puffed rice on the outside. I bought one bag to bring back home for around 10.000 Korean won. Next up, I went to one of the local restaurants to enjoy some local noodle soup. The weather was very nice on this particular day, so decided to try the local classic: 콧등치기 (Kotdeungchigi), an iced noodle soup whith a deep and mild flavour. The noodles were made by hand in front of me and served cold within just a few minutes. They paired great with the local Korean pancakes as well and helped me cool down. Due to the deep flavour if the noodle soup, I was in the mood for some sweet dessert. After asking advice to some local grandma's, they recommended me a local ricecake stall that sold 쑥떡, or Mugwort ricecake, which perfectly matched the spring weather. One pack was around 3.000 won, which made it a great souvenir for my friends near my university! Before leaving, I ran into a trot and dance performance by a local performance team. They sang performed several songs, among which was Arirang, a song native to this region in Korea! Although every city in Korea is home to a traditional market, this market was increadibly fun to visit. The locals were very friendly and helpful, the location is increadibly pretty (near a river and surrounded by cute cafes), and the food was delicious. So if you're in need for a delicious meal, or find yourself nearby, this place is must!
Make sure you prepare some cash, as most stands do not take cards. Also, if you do not speak korean, please make sure you download an app like papago before visiting, as most vendors are on the older side!
