I joined a Temple Stay at Yukjijansa in Namyangju. It was a short but deeply meaningful retreat that allowed me to step away from daily life and fully immerse myself in the calm and spiritual atmosphere of a Buddhist temple. On the first day, I arrived around 2:30 p.m., registered, and settled in. The first activity was an experience of moxibustion, a traditional Korean therapy that uses heat to stimulate certain points on the body. It was relaxing and surprisingly soothing. After that, we had a simple but delicious temple-style dinner. In the evening, we practiced 108 prostration meditation - it was physically challenging but incredibly cleansing for the mind. By the end, I felt calm and centered. From 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., there was a free performance session, where participants could make bracelets or simply enjoy the peaceful environment. At 10:00 p.m., lights went out, as the wake-up time was early - 5:00 a.m. On the second day, we woke up before dawn for the pre-dawn service, chanting sutras together in the main hall. The calmness of the early morning and the rhythmic sound of chanting created a beautiful sense of peace. Afterward, there was another morning service followed by walking meditation, where we mindfully walked through the temple grounds, focusing on each breath and step. The rest of the morning included some free time and another short performance session. Around noon, we had a light lunch meal, and by 1:00 p.m., the program came to an end. I left feeling refreshed, peaceful, and grateful for the chance to experience such a quiet and spiritual environment - a perfect reset for both body and mind.
Make sure to bring some snacks with you, since leaving the temple to go to town isn’t allowed
