About your trip

During my stay in Jeju, I had the chance to visit one of the most emotionally powerful places on the island — the Jeju 4·3 Peace Park. It’s not just a memorial, it’s a place of remembrance, reflection, and a reminder of the painful past that shaped modern Jeju. The park is dedicated to the victims of the Jeju April 3rd Incident (4·3 사건) — a tragic period from 1948 to 1954, when thousands of civilians were killed amid military suppression. Before visiting, I had only a vague idea of what happened during that time. But walking through the memorial grounds and the museum made the history feel heartbreakingly real. The museum is beautifully designed — calm, respectful, and informative. It provides historical context, personal stories, and visual materials (photos, documents, video testimonies) that help you understand both the events and the emotional scars they left behind. One of the most moving parts of the experience was seeing the long black wall engraved with the names of the victims — so many lives lost, many of them never fully identified. I felt a deep respect for the people of Jeju who carry this memory forward and continue to seek justice and peace.

TIP

The park is located in Bonggae-dong, about 30–40 minutes from Jeju City by car. If you don’t have a car, you can take a bus or taxi — but plan ahead, as public transportation may take longer!
