I recently had an amazing time at the Royal Ceramics Festival in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do — a destination that’s perfect for a one-day trip from Seoul. Gwangju is not far from the capital, and it’s a great place to dive into Korea’s rich history of ceramics, known for its beautiful, simple designs and centuries of craftsmanship. The festival atmosphere was lively and welcoming. With the sun finally shining, the outdoor market stalls were full of delicious snacks, creating the perfect setting for a fun and relaxing day. One of the highlights for me was finally checking another wish off my Korea bucket list: wearing a costume! This time, I dressed up as a "lazy warrior," and it was such a fun experience. The ceramics on display were stunning — and much more affordable than what I’ve seen in Seoul. It was heartwarming to see that some of the crafts were made by artists with disabilities, making each piece even more special. Everywhere I looked, there were kids dressed in colorful hanbok, playing traditional games — absolutely adorable! The festival also featured two special experiences: participants could either join the royal parade wearing traditional scholar clothes or try their hand at making ceramics themselves. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Korea's art history and appreciate the cultural heritage that Gwangju continues to celebrate. Adding to the significance of the event, the mayor and local officials even attended the ceramics symposium, showing their strong support for the arts. Big thanks to Funday Korea and Gwangju City for organizing such a memorable and inspiring day! ✨
Make sure to go through all the stalls in the market and eat like locals in the exhibition food court
