BUS, WALK
My recent two-day journey to Yeongju was a quiet revelation—filled with stunning landscapes, centuries-old stories, and a strong sense of Korea’s cultural roots. Tucked away in the mountains of Gyeongsangbuk-do, this peaceful city felt like a step back into another era. One of the most memorable moments was visiting Buseoksa Temple, a jewel of Korean Buddhist heritage. It’s one of the oldest temples in the country, and hiking up to it through pine trees and crisp mountain air was an experience in itself. At the summit, I stood in front of Muryangsujeon Hall, Korea’s oldest wooden structure, still standing gracefully since the 7th century. The ancient stone pagodas and sweeping views made the atmosphere feel both sacred and timeless. There’s a beautiful legend about Lady Seonmyo, whose spirit is said to have helped the temple’s founder—adding a layer of quiet magic to the surroundings. On the second day, I explored Sosu Seowon, the very first private Confucian academy established during the Joseon Dynasty. Walking through the grounds was like wandering through a still-life of the past—peaceful courtyards, simple yet elegant wooden buildings, and traces of scholarly life preserved in every corner. The place didn’t try to impress with grandeur, but rather with its balance, humility, and deep connection to nature. It offered a completely different kind of beauty: calm, thoughtful, and rooted in values of learning and discipline. Yeongju might not be on everyone’s travel list, but it left a lasting impression on me. In just two days, I felt like I had connected with two core parts of Korean tradition—the spiritual essence at Buseoksa, and the intellectual legacy at Sosu Seowon. If you’re looking for something off the beaten path with a mix of nature, history, and culture — Yeongju’s got you. 😻
It’s a stunning place definitely worth visiting so put it on your list
