About your trip

That day, I participated in the free Seoul Guided Walking Tour, and the tour ended at the park entrance. Since the entry fee was waived on that day, I felt I couldn’t miss the opportunity. Seodaemun Prison was used starting from the Japanese colonial period and only closed in 1987. The park area is vast, and the buildings are well-preserved. Since it was 삼일절 (Independence Movement Day), many parents brought their children to visit, and the Taegeukgi (Korean flag) fluttered in the wind in the hands of the people. The museum displayed many of the torture methods used at the time. Even though they were just models, they were still chilling and terrifying. There is also a space dedicated to commemorating all the known patriots who sacrificed their lives here. The walls are filled with their photos, which made me deeply appreciate the preciousness of a democratic and rule-of-law society. I highly recommend those who are interested in Korean modern history to visit 서대문 형무소.

TIP

Usually requires to buy a ticket, but free entry on special dates (such as 삼일절).
