Warm layers (in cooler seasons) : The area can be chilly, especially in autumn and winter. Water bottles : There are restaurants and cafés, but staying hydrated is important. Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses : Since it is an outdoor activity, it’s important to protect yourself from the sun. About your trip

I visited Namhan Sanseong as a part of our class with my friends and my professor. The experience was really really enriching as it allowed me to not only step into the heart of Korean history but also to appreciate the deep connection between the past and present. Namhan Sanseong is a fortress city built during the Joseon Dynasty, located in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it preserves traces of the Joseon Dynasty's history and culture. The fortress was strategically built along the rugged terrain, making it difficult to capture even by a large army. It is best known as the refuge of King Injo during the Manchu invasion, where he and his forces resisted the Qing army. Being with my friends and professor made it even more enjoyable. We shared insights and discussed the significance of the fortress, making the experience feel more like a shared journey rather than just a visit. My professor's explanations about the history of the site were incredibly detailed, which helped deepen my understanding of the Joseon Dynasty and the Manchu invasion. Walking through Namhan Sanseong, I could personally feel its historical significance. The fortress housed essential facilities, including a small palace, government offices, and pavilions, allowing for long-term survival during emergencies. As I walked along the fortress walls, I gained a deeper understanding of the tense atmosphere during the Manchu Invasion and the defensive strategies employed by the Joseon military. The panoramic view from the walls, overlooking the surrounding landscape, was particularly breathtaking. More than just a military stronghold, Namhan Sanseong is a cultural heritage site that blends harmoniously with nature. Namhan Sanseong is an essential heritage site for understanding Korean history and culture. It vividly illustrates the historical events of the Manchu Invasion, as well as the military and architectural characteristics of the Joseon Dynasty. Visiting Namhan Sanseong was a fascinating journey through Korea’s rich history and culture. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring the depths of the Joseon Dynasty.
