Haedong Yonggungsa Temple is a Buddhist temple located in Gijang-gun, Busan, South Korea. Since it's located at the seaside, it is a perfect spot to reflect and relax. I loved that it was easy to reach from the centre of Busan by transportation. At the entrance you are greeted by many different animal statues and as you go navigate through the temple you would get to admire the Buddhist building designs along with the beautiful seaside. The location of Haedong Yonggungsa Temple along the coast is significant because the ocean in Korean culture often symbolizes spiritual rebirth, vastness, and a source of life. In Buddhist teachings, the ocean is seen as a metaphor for the vast and endless nature of wisdom and enlightenment. There are also some particular aspects about this temple. 1. The name “Yonggung” translates to “Dragon Palace,” and the dragon is an important figure in Korean culture, symbolizing strength, protection, and auspiciousness. The dragon is also linked to water, as it was believed in traditional Korean mythology to control rainfall and water sources, which were vital for agriculture. 2. Visitors must descend a staircase of 108 steps, symbolizing the 108 earthly temptations in Buddhism. 3. According to legend, Monk Naong had a vision of the Sea Goddess during a time of drought, which inspired him to build the temple near the ocean. Admission to the temple is free of charge and it would be a perfect spot to enjoy the sunrise/sunset times or the upcoming cherry blossom season.
How to Get There: Take Bus 181 from Haeundae Station to Yonggungsa Temple stop, then walk about 10 minutes.
