Tongyeong is a city in the Southern part of Gyeongsang Province. I visited Tongyeong to see a friend, and ended up having a picnic together at Yi Sun-shin park. No admission fees were required. My friend told me right when we got there that the statue of admiral Yi Sun-shin is a lot more impressive in Tongyeong than Seoul and he didn't lie. The bronze statue overlooks the whole park and is oriented towards the island where he had his big victory over Japanese enemies at the end of the sixteenth century. I found that the most appealing aspect of the park is that comfortable seats are provided to rest and stare at the incredible views of the city. A temple and museum complement the historical aspect of the memorial for Admiral Yi Sun-shin. While taking a stroll, one can enjoy views of the South Sea (and even exercise!). Nearby, there was a market where we tried out some of the local specialties such as honey bread (kkulppang). Then we went on to the turtle ship for 2000won, known in Korean as Geobukseon, walked around and tried on ship captain's clothes. We could pretend to be in the 1500s on a warship thanks to the attraction. Overall, I really liked the respect paid to Yi Sun-shin in Tongyeong, one of the most famous historical figures in Korea. If you're interested in his legacy, that's the place to be!
