It will be a fun day to enjoy the Suwon Hwaseong fortress. Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is an incredible day trip from Seoul. Suwon Hwaseong was built in the late 18th century by King Jeongjo to honor his father, Prince Sado. The fortress served as a strategic defense and a tribute to Prince Sado’s tragic life. It’s the only fully intact walled city in Korea, offering a glimpse into the past. Walk along the impressive walls (5.74 kilometers) and enjoy scenic views of Suwon. You will visit the four main gates: Janganmun, Paldalmun, Changnyongmun, and Hwaseomun, then explore pavilions, watchtowers, and secret gates. Don’t miss the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, where King Jeongjo stayed during his visits.
Suwon is about an hour from Seoul by train (Line 1). From Suwon Station, take a local bus or walk to the fortress.
