Things to Prepare

- Comfortable Clothing: Traditional activities, like the tea ceremony and learning a traditional dance, often require sitting on the floor or moving comfortably. Wear loose, respectful clothing that allows for sitting cross-legged and light activity. - Camera or Smartphone: Capture photos of the stunning traditional architecture and natural surroundings. However, check if photography is permitted in all areas. - Basic Korean Phrases or Translator App: While many tours offer English information, basic Korean greetings and thank-yous can enhance your interactions. - Snacks and Water: The grounds are extensive, and exploring may take a few hours. Bringing a snack and water ensures you can comfortably enjoy the visit without interruptions. - Socks and Slip-On Shoes: If you’re participating in a tea ceremony or visiting temple interiors, you’ll likely need to remove your shoes. Clean socks and easy-to-remove shoes make this process simpler. - Respectful Attitude: As these are cultural and historical sites, it’s essential to be respectful of the customs, especially during ceremonies or performances.

About your trip

If you’re interested in history and philosophy, a visit to Korea’s seowons is a remarkable journey back to the Joseon Dynasty. I recently visited the Uisan Seowon in Yeongju, which was established in 1610. Korean seowons like Uisan had three essential roles: 1. Commemoration: Honoring the achievements and character of deceased scholars. 2. Education: Specialized teaching of Confucian principles, where students could learn through focused study and debate. 3. Public Discussion: A forum for engaging in important local and national issues. The highlight of my visit was participating in a classical tea ceremony. This beautiful, meditative experience set the tone, allowing us to appreciate the calm and reflective ambiance of Uisan Seowon. Following the tea ceremony, we enjoyed a performance on the 가야금, a traditional Korean string instrument, accompanied by a vocal performance that truly brought the atmosphere of Joseon-era scholarship to life. We then joined in learning a traditional dance, adding an interactive and lively touch to our experience. Next, I visited the Sosu Seowon, the oldest private Neo-Confucian academy in Korea. Founded during the Joseon period, Sosu Seowon was one of the few seowons spared in 1871, when the Daewongun Regent ordered the abolition of most of them. Remarkably well-preserved, Sosu Seowon retains its original structures and is designated a UNESCO National Treasure, reflecting its significant role in Korea's cultural heritage. For anyone interested in Korea’s educational and philosophical history, these seowons offer a profound experience, highlighting the enduring legacy of Confucian values and traditional learning. The combination of learning, performances, and hands-on cultural activities at Uisan Seowon made this journey truly unforgettable.
